UP’s National Institute of Geological Sciences (NIGS) volcanologist Dr. Mahar Lagmay introduced a flood hazard map which aimed to help and inform citizens using Google map as a platform.
With the help of a tool called flood hazard map, one can check if his town or province is flood prone. It will be helpful for real estate professionals and developers identify hazardous areas not suited for development.
Local government officials of Infanta, Quezon for example can check the flood prone area and use the flood hazard map to plan out pre-emptive evacuation or stage its search and rescue in times of calamity. Please navigate to http://www.nababaha.com/flood/infanta/infanta.html
Lagmay said he was thinking of games being incorporated with its community maps (which can be actually made) and let the children play with it so it sticks with them.
NIGS in partnership with IBM Corporate Service Corps won excellence award in the 2010 Asian Corporate Service Responsibility competition for their work on the Ondoy interactive flood maps. Awarding will be held on October 22 2010 in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. The National Institute of Geological Sciences (NIGS) is a multidisciplinary forum for the study of processes that shape the Earth.
