Details of the reportedly amazing benefits of spirulina to mankind were noted during the 1986 Chernobyl nuclear plant disaster in Ukraine.
Health authorities gave spirulina to children stricken with anemia and damaged bone marrow. The children have acquired the disease from eating radioactive contaminated fruit and vegetables in the region . Spirulina appeared to inhibit some cancers, indeed repaired cells after radiotherapy and helped build the immune system by boosting the manufacture of useful blood cells, bone marrow and stem cells. In a study, children who were fed with just five grams of spirulina in tablets every day made dramatic recoveries within six week. Children who were not given remain ill.
In a book entitled How to Help Support the Body’s Healing After Intense Radioactive or Radiation Exposure (Brodi 2004), he described that after the Chernobyl disaster, a British company, Earthrise UK, reportedly sent shipments of spirulina in tablet and powder form to clinics in Belarus to help treat children who were victims of radiation sickness. Earthrise addressed the shipment to the Children of Chernobyl Committee in Minsk. Thereafter, Soviet physicians at the Institute of Radiation Medicine in Minsk, administered 5 grams of spirulina daily to some of the radiation-exposed children for 45 consecutive days. They included other areas as well such as clinics in Grodno, Belarus, Kiev, Ukraine.
They were amazed to see the children show rapid improvements, compared to the children who did not receive spirulina, in the following ways:
The spirulina-treated children showed bone marrow, spinal fluid, blood cell and liver regeneration. Dangerously low white blood cell counts of about 1,000 (typical of leukemia) rose to 3,000 in only 20 days. Urine radioactivity levels decreased by 50 percent in 20 days.
Bodri noted, “Health restoration was reported even when radiation sickness was so advanced that the children’s eyes were bulging out of their sockets.” These results occurred despite ongoing radiation exposure from contaminated food and water.
Based on the Minsk results, the Belarus Ministry of Health concluded that spirulina accelerates the evacuation of radionuclides from the human body, without adverse side effects. Spirulina was particularly efficient at deactivating radioactive caesium from their bodies.
Potent Anti-Viral activity
Aside from its anti-cancer properties, the benefits one will get from taking spirulina are tremendous.
In a study by Richard Kozlenko DPM, Ph. D M.P.H. and Ronald H. Henson (2008), spirulina is reported to posses potent anti viral activity.
In a related study, another group of medical scientists has published new studies regarding a purified water extract unique to Spirulina named Calcium-Spirulan. It inhibits replication of HIV-1, Herpes Simplex, Human Cytomegalovirus, Influenza A virus, Mumps virus and Measles virus in-vitro yet is very safe for human cells. It protects human and monkey cells from viral infection in cell culture. According to peer reviewed scientific journal reports this extract, “holds great promise for treatment of …HIV-1, HSV-1, and HCM infections, which is particularly advantageous for AIDS patients who are prone to these life-threatening infections.”
In April 1996 an ongoing study jointly run by the Laboratory of Vital Pathogenesis, Dana-Farber Institute and Harvard Medical School announced that extracts from spirulina inhibited HIV-1 replication in human cells. HIV-1 is the AIDS virus. High concentrations prevented the reproduction of viruses and yet seemed non-toxic to human cells.
A similar study in Japan published results from a study of the Calcium-Spirulan extract and had found that spirulina inhibited the growth of HIV-1, Herpes Simplex, Human Cytomegalovirus (a cause of birth defects), Influenza A virus, Mumps virus and Measles virus.
Younger skin and shiny hair
Spirulina is one of the most concentrated natural sources of nutrition known. It contains all the essential amino acids, rich in chlorophyll, beta-carotene and its co-factors, and other natural phytochemicals. Spirulina is the only green food rich in GLA essential fatty acid. GLA stimulates growth in some animals and makes skin and hair shiny and soft yet more durable. GLA also acts as an anti-inflammatory, sometimes alleviating symptoms of arthritic conditions.

Researchers and scientists in the USA, Japan, China, Russia, India and other countries continue to study this remarkable food to unlock its potential.
