WHAT THE UNITED NATIONS SAY ABOUT SPIRULINA: “There is a need for both national governments and inter-governmental organizations to re-evaluate the potential of Spirulina to fulfill both their own food security needs as well as a tool for their overseas development emergency response efforts”- The UN-Food and Agriculture Organisation(FAO) Report said on Spirulina in 2008.
“For WHO, Spirulina represents an interesting food for multiple reasons, rich in iron and protein, and was administered to children without any risk. We, at WHO consider it a very suitable food” – United Nations
United Nations World Food Conference of 1974 and the World Health Organization (WHO), Geneva, Switzerland on June 8th, 1993 declared Spirulina as the best food for the future.
And if that is not enough, research found out that spirulina has:
- 290% more calcium than whole milk ( 290 % na higit na calcium kaysa sa gatas )
- 830% more protein than tofu (830% higit na protina sa tofu)
- 4500% more beta carotene than carrots (4500 % higit na beta carotene kaysa carrots)
- 8000% more iron than spinach (8000% higit na iron kaysa spinach)
MORE POTENTIAL HEALTH BENEFITS
Spirulina is a type of blue-green algae which is full of life-giving nutrients such as protein, beta carotene, chlorophyll, vitamin B complex, minerals, essential fatty acids and other important nutrients that our body needs.
Also known as “The best food for tomorrow” and “Super food” spirulina is becoming a sensation for people who prefer complimentary/alternative solution to health problems.
Some medical researchers consider Spirulina as a Nutraceutical product. What is Nutraceutical? It is blending of “nutrition” and “pharmaceutical.” Nutraceutical is more commonly defined as food containing health-giving additives and source of potential pharmaceuticals or medical benefits, including prevention and treatment of disease.
Nutraceutical practitioners and believers considered spirulina as a whole food.
Several scientific studies and reviews about spirulina point to its organic compounds with ability to inhibit viral replication, strengthen both the cellular and humoral arms of the body’s immune system and cause regression and inhibition of cancers. Albeit these studies are in its preliminary stage, and welcome further advance research, the results so far are promising.
Helps in Keeping High Energy Level
Spirulina may help fill up certain nutrients that could be lacking in one’s daily diet. For people who feel tired especially around mid-afternoon, spirulina is power packed with nutrients which will help them keep energized all day. Spirulina is also recommended for athletes, convalescing patients, and people with low energy.
Great vegetable substitute for children
Spirulina is very nutritious supplement for children who have poor eating habits. This will give the complete nutrition they need. It is a good substitute for vegetables children had difficulty eating. It has vitamins, minerals and amino acids (a great source of protein). Spirulina provides a lot of energy, promotes healthy joints and is an excellent source of iron.
Ideal anti-aging food
Aside from its concentrated nutrient value, spirulina is easily digested and assimilated by the body. It is loaded with antioxidants and has been discovered to contain compound like polysaccharides which has anti-aging effects.
Spirulina is a rich source of beta carotene which is ten times more concentrated than that found in carrots. This is good for healthy eyes and vision.
An Alkaline Food
It is different from other algae because it is easily digested and absorbed by the body. It is also known as one of the best alkaline food, which helps to change weak acidic body condition to a healthy alkaline one. Spirulina is 100% alkaline food that helps regulate the acid-alkaline balance (pH) of the body.
Chosen “Space Food”
New Scientist.com reported that the European Space Agency asked two French companies to formulate recipes to include spirulina among nine ingredients designed to nourish astronauts and keep them healthy in space.
Immune System Builder to Fight Cancer
Details of the reportedly amazing benefits of spirulina to mankind were noted during the 1986 Chernobyl nuclear plant disaster in Ukraine.
Health authorities gave spirulina to children stricken with anemia and damaged bone marrow. The children have acquired the disease from eating radioactive contaminated fruit and vegetables in the region . Spirulina appeared to inhibit some cancers, indeed repaired cells after radiotherapy and helped build the immune system by boosting the manufacture of useful blood cells, bone marrow and stem cells. In a study, children who were fed with just five grams of spirulina in tablets every day made dramatic recoveries within six week. Children who were not given remain ill.
In a book entitled How to Help Support the Body’s Healing After Intense Radioactive or Radiation Exposure (Brodi 2004), he described that after the Chernobyl disaster, a British company, Earthrise UK, reportedly sent shipments of spirulina in tablet and powder form to clinics in Belarus to help treat children who were victims of radiation sickness. Earthrise addressed the shipment to the Children of Chernobyl Committee in Minsk. Thereafter, Soviet physicians at the Institute of Radiation Medicine in Minsk, administered 5 grams of spirulina daily to some of the radiation-exposed children for 45 consecutive days. They included other areas as well such as clinics in Grodno, Belarus, Kiev, Ukraine.
They were amazed to see the children show rapid improvements, compared to the children who did not receive spirulina, in the following ways:
The spirulina-treated children showed bone marrow, spinal fluid, blood cell and liver regeneration. Dangerously low white blood cell counts of about 1,000 (typical of leukemia) rose to 3,000 in only 20 days. Urine radioactivity levels decreased by 50 percent in 20 days.
Bodri noted, “Health restoration was reported even when radiation sickness was so advanced that the children’s eyes were bulging out of their sockets.” These results occurred despite ongoing radiation exposure from contaminated food and water.
Based on the Minsk results, the Belarus Ministry of Health concluded that spirulina accelerates the evacuation of radionuclides from the human body, without adverse side effects. Spirulina was particularly efficient at deactivating radioactive caesium from their bodies.
Potent Anti-Viral activity
Aside from its anti-cancer properties, the benefits one will get from taking spirulina are tremendous.
In a study by Richard Kozlenko DPM, Ph. D M.P.H. and Ronald H. Henson (2008), spirulina is reported to posses potent anti viral activity.
In a related study, another group of medical scientists has published new studies regarding a purified water extract unique to Spirulina named Calcium-Spirulan. It inhibits replication of HIV-1, Herpes Simplex, Human Cytomegalovirus, Influenza A virus, Mumps virus and Measles virus in-vitro yet is very safe for human cells. It protects human and monkey cells from viral infection in cell culture. According to peer reviewed scientific journal reports this extract, “holds great promise for treatment of …HIV-1, HSV-1, and HCM infections, which is particularly advantageous for AIDS patients who are prone to these life-threatening infections.”
In April 1996 an ongoing study jointly run by the Laboratory of Vital Pathogenesis, Dana-Farber Institute and Harvard Medical School announced that extracts from spirulina inhibited HIV-1 replication in human cells. HIV-1 is the AIDS virus. High concentrations prevented the reproduction of viruses and yet seemed non-toxic to human cells.
A similar study in Japan published results from a study of the Calcium-Spirulan extract and had found that spirulina inhibited the growth of HIV-1, Herpes Simplex, Human Cytomegalovirus (a cause of birth defects), Influenza A virus, Mumps virus and Measles virus.
Younger skin and shiny hair
Spirulina is one of the most concentrated natural sources of nutrition known. It contains all the essential amino acids, rich in chlorophyll, beta-carotene and its co-factors, and other natural phytochemicals. Spirulina is the only green food rich in GLA essential fatty acid. GLA stimulates growth in some animals and makes skin and hair shiny and soft yet more durable. GLA also acts as an anti-inflammatory, sometimes alleviating symptoms of arthritic conditions.
Increases Beneficial Intestinal Flora
Spirulina acts as a functional food, feeding beneficial intestinal flora, especially Lactobacillus and Bifidus. Maintaining a healthy population of these bacteria in the intestine reduces potential problems from harmful pathogens like E. coli and Candida albicans. Studies show when Spirulina is added to the diet, beneficial intestinal flora increase.
Muscle Builder to keep you in shape
Another study by a group of Brazilian researchers at the Sao Paulo State University in 2008 said spirulina may be even better for your muscles than the dairy protein casein. About 60 percent of spirulina’s dry weight is protein, which is essential for growth and cell regeneration. It is a good replacement for fatty and cholesterol-rich meat and dairy products in one’s diet. Every 10 grams of spirulina can supply up to 70 percent of the minimum daily requirements for iron, and about three to four times of minimum daily requirements for vitamins A (in the form of beta carotene), B complex, D,and K. By itself, it does not contain vitamin C, but it helps maintain this vitamin’s potency. Spirulina contains all major nutrients for optimum body performance because it has chlorophyll.
The potent properties found in spirulina from scientific papers are promising in the area of cancer and viral disease prevention and reduction.
Bacterial or parasitic infections may be prevented or respond better to treatment and wound healing may improve. Anemia, poisoning and immunodeficiency and its symptoms may be alleviated. Researchers and scientists in the USA, Japan, China, Russia, India and other countries continue to study this remarkable food to unlock its potential. More interesting research is needed to determine its usefulness against AIDS and other killer diseases. However, it is already clear this safe and natural food provides concentrated nutritional support for optimum health and wellness.
