BAKIT KAILANGANG GAWIN ANG VERMICULTURE?

Unang una, tayo ay katiwala ng Dios sa mga nilikha Niya dito sa mundo. Ginawa ng Dios ang bulate na nagbibigay ng natural at organikong pataba. Ang chemical fertilizer naman ay katha lang ng tao. Isipin natin, may mas gaganda pa ba sa gawa ng Dios? May mas malalim na katwiran ang makikita natin at ito ay ang masamang epekto ng kemikal na pataba sa ating mga lupa. Ibig sabihin ang malinaw na katotohanan, ang katalinuhan ng tao ay kamangmangan sa Dios.

KABUTIHANG NAIDUDULOT NG VERMICOMPOST

• Upang makakuha ng sustansya para sa lupa, gumamit ng mga halamang leguminous  na pang compost upang mapataas ang nitrogen gaya ng kakawati, ipil-ipil, acacia, malunggay, mani and mungo. Potassium mula sa katawan, dahon at balat ng saging at papaya. Ang tae ng mga hayop ay mahusay na source ng nitrogen at phosporous.
• VERMICULTURE BASICS
  (mga dapat isa-alang alang)

1. Bedding o paglalatagan.
2. Pagkain – mga tuyong dahon, damo, ginupit-gupit na basang papel at mga karton. Dapat ang damong gagamitin ay di pa magulang (nasa yugto ng pagdadahon)pa lamang kung ito ay pipinuhin sa pamamagitan ng manwal na pamamaraan nguni’t kung gagamit ng makina ay maaring kahit magulang na. Dapat ay may tamang dami ng bulate. Pagmarami ang bulate, mabilis din ng pagbubulok.
3. Tamang moisture. Kailangan mamasa-masa
4. Aeration o tamang sirkulasyon ng hangin – technique add small twigs
5. Temperatura mabubuhay ang mga bulate sa temperaturang 20-35 (^oC).  Lalayas ang mga bulate sa lugar kapag mas mataas sa  35^oC ang temperatura at kung hindi ay madali silang mamamatay. Karaniwang ang temperaturang mataas sa 20^oC ay nakaka ingganyo sa pagpaparami.

URBAN VERMICULTURE

The campaign for zero waste management demands cooperation from urban dwellers as our landfill become full up to the brim. Thinking of ways to recycle waste in an urban setting might pose a challenge to anybody when space seemed to be a luxury. Compostable wastes such as fruit and vegetable peelings, eggshells, seeds, leaves, flowers, twigs, branches, and others need not to go to the landfill. It could stop right in your home and turn them into income generating compost. Check this one out. A little inspiration might help.

Ingeniously using the concrete firewall as worm bedding in an urban setting is a creative way of maximizing space in raising worms and managing one’s garbage.

Covering the decaying food scraps with moist paper is the method used to prevent flies and other insects away from the beddings. It also neutralizes the odor from decaying fruit and vegetable peelings and other food scraps. Take note: worms should not be fed with citrus, onions, greasy and fatty foods. Products with vinegar, garlic, spicy food, meat and bones are also not recommended .

The beddings has to be checked once in a while for moisture and to make sure if food is enough or needs to be added.

For serious vermicomposters, a shredder machine is used to convert dried leaves, twigs, small branches into pulp for faster decomposition. The decaying material will be easily consumed by the worms.

LOW COST VERMICULTURE FOR FARMING

Psalm 115:16 “The heaven, even the heavens, are the LORD’s: but the earth hath he given to the children of men. “ Let us be stewards of God’s creation.

Vermiculture is the cultivation of worms for composting. The resulting nutrient rich material from the worms is called vermicast which agriculturists consider as the best organic fertilizer in the world. Farmers and consumers alike are now on the lookout for chemical free produce as people see the urgency to reverse the damage and ill effects of chemical fertilizers and pesticides. A farmer reported that chemical spray contributed to several deaths of water buffaloes in their area days after drinking pesticide contaminated water from the rice paddy. Research concluded that chemical fertilizer has harmful effects on the aquatic life in the water surrounding the areas that have been treated by such fertilizers. Herbicides sometimes leave harmful toxic residue on the plants. Pesticide contaminated fruits and vegetables eventually land on the  table for human consumption which is hazardous to health.

As consumer behavior shifts in favor of safer and healthier organic produce, a brighter future awaits vermiculture farmers.

In addition, it is a fact that waste management has become an important issue nowadays that must be addressed with a sense of urgency not only in the municipal level but even at individual household level as landfills are dumped with it more than capacity. Vermiculture can be done practically in every household.

With vermiculture, waste is converted into useful and earth friendly organic substance which is also the best fertilizer for the plants. The multiplier effects of this technology are numerous.

Vermicomposting helps in managing our kitchen waste as this can be done right under our kitchen sink because almost all kinds of fruit and vegetables peelings are good food for the worms. These scraps can be put on top of their bedding right away. However, worms hate onions (too strong for them), citrus family which is too acidic and oily foods scraps.

From these decaying scraps which the worms love to eat, they produce slow release fertilizer in the form of vermicast or worm poo. Vermicast is complete fertilizer and biologically safe and active.

Vermicompost or vermicast (earthworm manure) not only improves the quality of the soil but it helps reduce pollution, carbon dioxide emission and other green house gases which contribute to global warming. It is also a big help in reducing garbage in our landfill.Vermicompost is considered as an excellent product, since it ishomogenous, has desirable aesthetics, has reduced levels of contaminants and tends to hold more nutrients over a longer period without impacting the environment.

Businessmen-farmers considered it as black gold because there is a huge demand for organic fertilizer. Cultivated worms can be used as livestock feeds. There is a demand for cultivated worms for fishing enthusiasts who use them as baits.

Other aspects of vermiculture business has yet to be explored and the demand for vermicompost at the municipal level is high according to Grassland (a vermiculture farm) owner, Mr. Jose A. Honrado Jr.

Roll down the sakoline matting on the ground. Bury the 18″ bamboo sticks deep into the ground as shown above.

Tie the four corners of the sakoline as shown with gauge 18 wire to secure them.

The height should be at least six inches to make room for worm feeding.

 

Take note of the two 10″X 10″ holes to serve as drainage with sack cloth underneath to prevent worms from escaping.

Prepare worm bedding using chopped banana stalks.

Chopping more banana stalks. Worms love to eat the decaying stalks and the moist environment.

 

Now, add in grass cuttings, ipil-ipil leaves(Laeucaena leucocephala) kitchen wastes such as banana peels and other fruit peels.

Add some dirt and vermicast so as not to stress or shock the worms in its new home.

 Finally, add the worms to its new residence. The worms being photosensitive will find their way underneath.

GANODERMA LUCIDUM AS AN ADJUVANT TREATMENT FOR CANCER AND OTHER DISEASES

A medical research in Singapore revealed that radiotherapy and chemotherapy caused direct death of one-third of cancer patients. However, recent findings by a group of researchers pointed out that Ganoderma Lucidum (GL) extract (also known as red mushroom) can cut cancer cells and tumor recurrence. To elaborate further, the study in (2006) by JT Xie; et al., found out that (GL) extract inhibits proliferation of certain type of human colorectal cancer cells. In a separate study, Ganoderic acid T (GA-T) an anti-tumor candidate is derived from the mycelia of the same medicinal mushroom. Furthermore, results of a study in (2004) by Jiang J; et al., at Cancer Research Laboratory of the Methodist Research Institure, Indianapolis, suggest that Ganoderma Lucidum inhibits the growth of MDA-MB-231 breast cancer cells by modulating Akt/NF-kappaB signaling and could have potential therapeutic use for the treatment of breast cancer

Chemotherapy is one of the three options mostly recommended by conventional medicine aside from surgery and radiation in the treatment of cancer. It is one approach to cancer treatment which millions of people around the world have been subjected to and more often than not, resulted only to death for late-stage cancer patients as revealed by several investigations. It is not uncommon to hear people saying, “I should have not pushed him had I known he would not make it.” The role that chemotherapy plays in hastening or even causing death of late-stage cancer patients is being questioned. Further, the study revealed that two out every five patients had suffered significant poisoning from the treatment.

Recently, a study by the National Confidential Enquiry into Patient Outcome and Deaths in Britain had studied 600 cases of cancer sufferers who passed on within 30 days of treatment. Majority of them, declared “incurable” by doctors, had still been put on chemotherapy sessions for palliative purposes. The study found out that one in every four of the deaths had either been sped up or even caused by chemotherapy.

Meanwhile, Dr. Youpeng Huang, Director of Beijing International Anti-Aging Medical Center ventilated that cancer treatment today around the world has been based on misunderstanding. He reasoned that the trend is simply focused on trying to kill the tumor cells by using radiotherapy and chemotherapy which also kills the cells of the immune system, resulting in weakened or loss of the body’s defense mechanism. Consequently, because damage even on healthy cells and organs are so severe, many cancer patients die during the rehabilitation phase (and for some, not even able to finish the full session especially with the elderly patients). The report also quoted that a medical findings from Singapore indicated that radiotherapy and chemotherapy caused direct death of one-third of cancer patients.   Huang added that human body has necrosis as well as cancer cells. Growth of those cells is a product of the body metabolism. Overcoming tumor growth depends on the prevention. It is one-sided approach to apply treatment by surgery or irradiating the tumor to cure cancer patients and compromising the immune system as well.

A sensible way to fight cancer is to try to eradicate the cancer cells and help the immune system recover through nutritional supplementation or otherwise known as complimentary/alternative medicine or CAM alongside conventional protocols. Although studies show that early stage cancer patients can recover through radiotherapy and chemotherapy, medical experts assessed that mid-term or late stage patients are generally too weak after radiotherapy and chemotherapy to regain their health. The drastic treatment, in fact, frequently hastens death.   More often than not, clinical investigations show that most cancer patients are not diagnosed until in the mid or late stage when patients are already suffering from physical discomfort and compromised immunity. Thus, experts’ advice measures to enhance general health conditions and improve immunity should be taken prior to radiation therapy to expect the best result. It is unwise to rush into the treatment without first laying a good foundation. Patients must have a positive mental attitude, lead a healthy lifestyle by not smoking and drinking, have proper nutrition and supplementation.

The report recommended that cancer patients take Ganoderma lucidum products at least two weeks before chemotherapy because it improves the cellular activity and reduce damage to the immune system due to chemotherapy. However, the report added these effects take time as one cannot expect improvement overnight. According to Chinese Pharmacopoeia, Ganoderma lucidum can considerably improve body’s immunity and is recommended for cancer patients while undergoing drug treatment, as well as for their post-operation recuperation.

Polysaccharides, the active substances of Ganoderma lucidum, enhance the growth and multiplication of the immune cells and macrophages phagocytosis. At the same time, they can activate lymphocyte generating stimulating factors to break down telomerase activity in and accelerate the death of the cancer cells. Ganoderma triterpenes, however, can promote human metabolism and detoxification function, as well as inhibit the growth and metastasis of cancer cells. It also helps improve appetite and cut side effects caused by medication.

It protects human and monkey cells from viral infection in cell culture. According to peer reviewed scientific journal reports this extract, “holds great promise for treatment of …HIV-1, HSV-1, and HCM infections, which is particularly advantageous for AIDS patients who are prone to these life-threatening infections.”

In April 1996 an ongoing study jointly run by the Laboratory of Vital Pathogenesis, Dana-Farber Institute and Harvard Medical School announced that extracts from spirulina inhibited HIV-1 replication in human cells. HIV-1 is the AIDS virus. High concentrations prevented the reproduction of viruses and yet seemed non-toxic to human cells.

A similar study in Japan published results from a study of the Calcium-Spirulan extract and had found that spirulina inhibited the growth of HIV-1, Herpes Simplex, Human Cytomegalovirus (a cause of birth defects), Influenza A virus, Mumps virus and Measles virus.
